The €37 million system enhances early warning against drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic threats

Spain has transferred Lanza LTR-25 tactical early-warning radar to Ukraine, significantly strengthening the country's ability to monitor its airspace and detect aerial threats. The delivery was reported by the Spanish outlet Xataka, which noted the strategic importance of the system amid ongoing russian air attacks.

The radar was developed by the Spanish defense company Indra and is valued at approximately €37 million. According to the report, LTR-25 system offers long-range detection capabilities, allowing Ukraine to identify potential threats at distances exceeding 450 kilometers.

Notably, similar technology had previously been withheld from Ukraine by the United States for an extended period, making Spain's decision particularly significant. The transfer reflects Madrid's growing role in supporting Ukraine's air defense and surveillance infrastructure.

Lanza LTR-25 system is designed to detect a wide spectrum of aerial threats, ranging from drones and cruise missiles to ballistic missiles and stealth aircraft. This capability is especially relevant in a conflict where russia relies heavily on mass and combined air attacks as a tool of attrition.

Journalists at Xataka emphasize that the radar is optimized for operation in complex electromagnetic environments. It is capable of functioning effectively amid heavy electronic interference and electronic warfare, conditions that are increasingly common over Ukraine's battlefield and rear areas.

Another key advantage of the system is its compatibility with Western air defense systems already in service with Ukraine. The radar can seamlessly integrate with platforms such as Patriot, SAMP/T, IRIS-T, and NASAMS, enhancing their situational awareness and reaction time.

By providing early detection and improved target tracking, the radar can act as a force multiplier for these air defense systems. Earlier warning allows interceptors to be deployed more efficiently, increasing the chances of successful engagement against incoming threats.

Technically, the radar operates in the L-band and uses a phased-array architecture with digital beamforming. These characteristics allow it to track hundreds of targets simultaneously with high accuracy, even during electronic attacks, and to detect low radar cross-section targets such as drones and cruise missiles.
