Ukrainian military command has pushed back against recent media claims suggesting a potential encirclement threat to the city of Sumy, stating that the situation along the northern border remains stable and under control. Official statements released on April 20 by both the Joint Forces and the Kursk Operational Group reject reports of any significant russian breakthroughs.
According to the Joint Forces Command, which oversees the defense of southern Sumy region, russian forces have not advanced beyond limited positions near the border. While the enemy has managed to occupy several small settlements directly adjacent to the frontier, their presence remains shallow and tactically constrained.

Ukrainian officials specified that temporarily controlled territory extends only 3-4 kilometers into Sumy region. Settlements such as Hrabovske and Myropilske were cited as examples of areas seized after prolonged attempts by russian forces to push deeper into Ukrainian territory. However, these gains are described as limited and insufficient to alter the broader operational picture.
Crucially, the distance between current russian positions and the city of Sumy remains significant – over 35 kilometers. This gap, combined with ongoing Ukrainian defensive measures, undermines claims of any imminent threat of encirclement or operational isolation of the city.
The Ukrainian military also emphasized that all attempts by russian forces to infiltrate deeper into the region are being detected and neutralized in a timely manner. Defensive lines are holding, and there is no indication that russian units have achieved any operational-level success in this sector.
A similar assessment was provided by the Kursk Operational Group of Ukrainian forces, which operates in the adjacent area of responsibility. According to their statement, the situation remains stable, with no actions by russian troops that could reasonably be described as breakthroughs or attempts to encircle Sumy.
