The UK government has officially confirmed that, within weeks, production of advanced anti-aircraft drones will start in Britain under the joint Ukraine–UK Octopus initiative. The program envisions a technology and intellectual property exchange between Kyiv and London, as well as the rapid deployment of UK manufacturing capacity to supply these interceptor drones to Ukraine's Defense Forces.
"Our Ukrainian partners will share technologies and intellectual property with the United Kingdom, and we, in turn, will further develop and mass-produce them so that we can deliver thousands of interceptor drones to Ukraine every month," said Elliott Colburn, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces.

This is a story about how urgently needed weapons for Ukraine can be developed and put into mass production within tight timeframes — and how that can be done using another country’s industrial base.
The Octopus programme was publicly announced only a few months ago. In early September, the UK government revealed the launch of a joint development and production effort with Ukraine for high-tech weapons, with the anti-aircraft drones becoming the first tangible example of such cooperation. UK officials noted that this partnership was made possible by an earlier agreement establishing a formal industrial alliance between Kyiv and London.
Although work on the project likely began before the official announcement, Octopus stands out as a compelling case: it delivers immediate operational benefits to Ukraine while helping the British defense industry develop an effective countermeasure against long-range attack drones such as the Shahed series.
Preliminary estimates suggest that British factories could produce several thousand Ukrainian-designed interceptor drones per month. The initial batches will be tested by Ukrainian forces, and if results prove positive, the UK intends to expand production further. Eventually, manufacturing is also expected to begin in Ukraine.
Moreover, Ukrainian-designed Octopus interceptors are expected to become a core component of the proposed European "drone wall" — a continent-wide anti-drone initiative that, according to many experts, cannot succeed without Ukraine’s participation.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy released the first public image of the Octopus anti-aircraft drone. Its technical specifications have not yet been disclosed.
