Ukrainian air defense operators from the Karat interceptor drone crew were initially tasked with hunting down russian Lancet loitering munition, but instead encountered a more advanced unmanned system in the air – the newest russian AI-enabled UAV known as Klin. The incident was reported by the West Air Command, which released footage of the engagement.
According to military personnel, the interceptor crew from the anti-aircraft missile regiment received intelligence about an enemy drone operating in their assigned southern sector. Based on prior experience and threat patterns, they initially assessed the target as Lancet, a system previously used to strike their positions.

The commander of the crew, an operator with the call sign Kevin, noted that the unit had already suffered losses from Lancet strikes, making the interception mission particularly significant. However, during the engagement, it became clear that the aerial target did not match the expected profile and instead corresponded to a newer russian platform.
The drone was identified as the Klin, UAV described by Ukrainian sources as featuring autonomous targeting capabilities supported by artificial intelligence. Unlike earlier systems, it is reportedly capable of detecting and engaging targets without GPS guidance or continuous operator control.
The report suggests that Klin system can operate at ranges of up to 120 kilometers, carry a warhead of approximately five kilograms, and function in a loitering "airborne minefield" mode, waiting for targets to enter a designated kill zone. This significantly increases its flexibility compared to more traditional loitering munitions.
After visual confirmation of the target, the interceptor crew received authorization to engage. The final strike was carried out by drone interceptor operator Roman, known by the call sign Pokhresnyk, who successfully completed the engagement.
The interception marked the first reported encounter between Ukrainian air defense drone units and Klin system. Ukrainian forces described it as an important data point in understanding the evolution of кussian unmanned aerial capabilities.
