Denmark went for "zoo" approach to form ground-based air defense component by buying three similar medium-range SAM systems

Denmark approached the issue of forming the ground component of its air defense quite massively and, most importantly, quickly. And following the emergency purchase and even leasing of air defense systems for 0.8 billion euros in summer this year, in recent weeks it managed to contract a large number of medium-range anti-aircraft missile systems, totaling 21 SAM systems.

At the same time, closing the needs for these air defense means is only achieved through agreeing to a "zoo." That is, purchasing different samples from different manufacturers in one weapons category. Because currently we're talking about the intention to purchase up to 4 NASAMS systems from Norwegian Kongsberg, up to 6 VL Mica from French segment of MBDA, and up to 11 Iris-T SLM from German Diehl.

Information about Denmark's Ministry of Defense concluding a whole series of contracts in recent weeks was collected by Hartpunktpublication.

Specifically, four NASAMS air defense systems were purchased for 540 million euros. For 1.2 billion euros two VL Mica air defense systems with an option for four more. For 2.1 billion euros three Iris-T SLM and an option for eight more.

And from Defense Express we note that it doesn't include undisclosed SAMP/T NG procurement and 16 Skyranger 30 Shahed killers.

And such a "zoo" of medium-range air defense systems of course leads to more expensive operation compared to one unified sample. Although a certain option did exist, because the country until recently considered the option to purchase Barak MX in Israel. And it differs in that one air defense system integrates short, medium and long-range missiles, also has the ability to shoot down ballistic missiles.

But the IAI proposal was rejected. At the same time, the reason was not announced. Therefore, one can only guess whether the reason for refusal lies in Barak MX technical flaws, pricing policy, delivery times, or political issues. And ultimately Denmark still went for a "zoo," because in Europe no manufacturer definitely has the ability in the foreseeable future to deliver 21 air defense systems.

And while Denmark awaits its air defense systems, from Defense Express we call to join the fundraiser for what already works: Unified Fundraiser from Prytula Foundation for interceptor drones for Defense Forces of Ukraine
