Ukrainian Air Force uses highways instead of runways at airfields to protect its fighters from enemy attacks

Ukraine is trying to reduce the risk of damage to the F-16 fighter jets that were recently received from Denmark and the Netherlands. For this purpose, Ukrainian pilots use ordinary roads instead of runways.

This was reported by LCI French TV channel, citing a video received from Xavier Tutelman, former French military pilot.

It is noted that the use of air bases would be imprudent, as russians certainly know where the air bares are located. Therefore, the Ukrainians have actually turned certain sections of roads that are normally used by cars into runways.

"There are several kilometers where there are no central barriers, and the roads have been reinforced and cleared," Tutelman emphasized.

French General Michel Yakovleff, former deputy chief of Shape headquarters of NATO, said he was not surprised by the decision of the Ukrainian military command. He noted that such methods had been used in the past in other countries. On the other hand, takeoffs in such conditions are more risky than on traditional runways, which have appropriate markings and are specially designed to accommodate aircraft.

Earlier Defense Express reported that Ukrainian Air Force had shown the detailed use of JDAM-ER and revealed its actual range.
