Today marks exactly two months since the day when, on early morning February 24, Ukraine once again felt the treachery of its northeastern neighbor. Two months into the war, there have been over 2,200 civilians killed and almost 3,000 wounded. The war has taken the lives of 208 children and left 387 injured. The two months of war with Russia have forced every fourth Ukrainian out of their home; 7.1 million people have become internally displaced and 5 million more fled to other countries. The day 60th of War between Ukraine and russian federation coincided with Orthodox Easter. With war still going on around them, Ukrainians had to mark Orthodox Easter weekend differently this year - but some made an effort all the same, coming out for a blessing on Holy Saturday

Brief facts:

  • Ukrainian cities Poltava and Kremenchuk suffered heavy missile hits.
  • During the 60 days of full-scale war, Russia killed 213 children in Ukraine, another 398 were injured.
  • Ukraine’s troops have repulsed 12 attacks and destroyed 4 tanks, 5 artillery systems, 15 armored personnel vehicles, 1 armored combat vehicle, and 4 tracks in the Joint Forces Operation (JFO) area on Saturday, April 23.
  • A number of special monitoring mission staff members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe have been detained in eastern Ukraine.
  • President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky states that Ukraine will start to retake occupied territories as soon as receive enough weapons.

Our intelligence suggests this is about 30 to 40 people. After all, Ukraine is working not only to shoot down and destroy missiles, but also to identify persons who can program these missiles. 18:35 Invaders start forced mobilization of residents in Kherson, Zaporizhia, Kharkiv regions – Defense Intelligence of Ukraine

"The occupiers are mobilizing Ukrainian doctors who remain in the occupied territories. In particular, in the city of Volchansk (Kharkiv region), in primary health care, junior medical personnel are forcibly sent to the front line to provide first aid to Russian wounded. In case of refusal, doctors are threatened with execution," Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reports, according to Interfax-Ukraine.

The occupiers have blocked any possibility of leaving the Kherson region to the Ukraine-controlled territories to ensure mobilization. Russian servicemen and FSB officers are looking for people of military age in the Zaporizhzhia region to forcibly enlist them as combat units and send them to the most problematic areas.

18:11 Russia is staging a "false flag" performance with tanks

Operational Command "South" reports that Russian tanks with Ukrainian flags was spotted in Hrozove settlement of the Kherson region. The column moved towards Molodetske village.

In this manner Russians are trying to imitate the presence of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the occupied territories, the Command claims. Then, according to the plan, these tanks are launching attacks on local settlements, thus creating a fake image of the Ukrainian army "attacking" civilians of the Kherson region.

As the Command explains, this campaign is aimed to pressure the local population, spread propaganda, undermine the Ukrainian authority and create "pseudo-republics", not to mention the danger to the lives of civilians.

16:31 Russia continues to attack Mariupol despite Putin's order to stop the assault

"Orthodox Easter 2022. But right now, Russian Federation is continuously attacking the Mariupol Azovstal [steel plant]. The place where our civilians & military are located is shelled with heavy air bombs & artillery. RF accumulates forces & equipment for the assault. Who gave the order 'not to storm'?" wonders Mykhailo Podoliak, the Adviser to the President's Office and member of the Ukraine-Russia negotiation group.

He offered three "Mariupol steps" for the Kremlin to follow:

  1. Announce a working Easter truce and provide a ceasefire in Mariupol.
  2. Establish an immediate humanitarian corridor for civilians.
  3. Agree to a “special round of negotiations” for the exchange of military that was proposed by the Ukrainian side earlier

16:13 Ukraine to ask for more weapons during the visit of senior US officials

Ukraine will ask the US for more heavy weapons to defeat Russia during the upcoming visit to Kyiv by the US secretary of state Antony Blinken and defense secretary Lloyd Austin, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday, April 23. The Head of state underlined this visit as being "very important" for Ukraine, The Guardian reports.

The Ukrainian president said the US and UK had provided the “best military support” to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country two months ago. He credited "western partners" for the recent speed-up of arms deliveries, especially Washington. Zelenskyy said he would present an "armaments list" to the Biden administration on Sunday, April 24 in order to thwart Russia’s ongoing attempt to seize the Donbas region.

With sufficient arms Ukraine’s military could take back "tomorrow" territory temporarily occupied by Russian forces in the south and east, the President said.

14:30 The UN’s Ukraine crisis coordinator, Amin Awad, has called for an “immediate stop” to fighting in Mariupol so that civilians trapped in the city can be evacuated today, The Guardian reports citing AFP.

“The lives of tens of thousands, including women, children and older people, are at stake in Mariupol,” Awad said in a statement. “We need a pause in fighting right now to save lives.

“The longer we wait the more lives will be at risk. They must be allowed to safely evacuate now, today. Tomorrow could be too late.”

His call came after an attempted evacuation from Mariupol by Ukraine had failed on Saturday, with Kyiv saying it was “thwarted” by Russian forces.

The UN statement said there was an estimated 100,000 civilians trapped in the city, which has been heavily destroyed after being besieged by Russian forces for weeks.

Awad said Orthodox Easter, which is celebrated in both Russia and Ukraine, provided an opportunity to halt hostilities.

“At a time of a rare calendar alignment of the religious holidays of Orthodox Easter, Passover and Ramadan, it is the time to focus on our common humanity, setting divisions aside,” Awad said.

13:30 Today marks exactly two months since the day when, on early morning February 24, Ukraine once again felt the treachery of its northeastern neighbor.

Rocket and missile attacks rained down on dozens of peaceful cities. Ukrainians, who were about to start a new working day, began a different life, when the Russian Federation started up an all-out war against our country and all the Ukrainian people on February 24, 2022.

Not the life they planned to live saving their loved ones and their country, but a hard life in the army, a life of survival in evacuation. There was no wide choice as an evil, insidious enemy had come to the Ukrainian land with the war

Two months into the war, there have been over 2,200 civilians killed and almost 3,000 wounded. The war has taken the lives of 208 children and left 387 injured. Russians themselves -- prisoners of war, those who were not forced to open their eyes until when they had found themselves in the hell of fierce Ukrainian resistance – are testifying on who is to blame for unleashing the war in Ukraine. They happened to be more fortunate than those from among the 21,000+ invaders who have fertilized the Ukrainian black earth and can only be silent reproach to those who sent them to fight in Ukraine. Now the floor goes to those of the invaders who were lucky to survive and be captured (there are over 700 of them so far).

12:58 Russian invaders continue shelling and attempting to storm the Azovstal plant in the besieged city of Mariupol, launching air strikes on children’s heads.

The relevant statement was made by Azov Regiment Deputy Commander Captain Sviatoslav Palamar in a video address.

“Please remember, right now when you are sharing Easter images and enjoying the truce, the enemy is dropping bombs on innocent children’s heads in Mariupol,” Palamar told.

In his words, Russians continue to launch air strikes on Mariupol defenders and civilians, shoot with cannons, tanks and naval guns, and the enemy infantry are attempting to storm.

Palamar expressed gratitude to those who are trying to help, not in words but in deeds, Mariupol residents to get evacuated from the dangerous area and the Ukrainian military, fighting against the enemy superior forces, to break out of encirclement. Palamar urged the entire civilized world to join these efforts.

"It is only a matter of time before all Russian murderers feel what a fair response to their crimes is. It is only a matter of time before we can bring all the deported Ukrainians home. It is only a matter of time before all our people all over Ukraine feel what a strong peace is," he said.

00:40 The United Kingdom’s ministry of defense has released an intelligence update detailing accusations that Russia is planning to conscript Ukrainian civilians in the partly occupied southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, The Guardian reports.

This would follow similar practices in the Russian-occupied Crimea and Donbas regions.

“Any enlistment of Ukrainian civilians into the Russian armed forces, even if presented by Russia as being voluntary or military service in accordance with Russian law, would constitute a violation of article 51 of the fourth Geneva Convention,” the ministry of defense tweeted.

In addition to the detained staff members, Deirdre Brown, Britain’s deputy ambassador to the OSCE, said she has received “alarming reports that Russia’s proxies in Donbas are threatening mission staff, equipment and premises.”
