At the end of February this year, the European Defense Agency (EDA) launched an innovation competition in the field of strike drones (loitering munitions) and strike systems Sentinel Strike Challenge. The goal of this competition is to promote modern battlefield technologies, such as unmanned systems, loitering munitions etc.
As hartpunkt reports, this will not be a classic procurement procedure, when one or several manufacturers are selected to conclude hard contracts, but is, in the literal sense, a competition with financial prizes, the goal of which is to stimulate innovation and technological development. Such initiatives should provide space for small defense companies as well as startups that are not traditional suppliers of defense products to armed forces of European countries (although specific requirements for participants have not yet been made public).

It is noted that to evaluate certain developments, the agency will use data from realistic tests conducted as part of multinational exercises. Detailed requirements for participation will be announced on March 17 this year at an information day.
As the publication notes, such a competition can help to provide a reliable overview of the market, thanks to which, ultimately, different countries will be able to make more informed decisions about the purchase of certain drones. This is extremely relevant in conditions when more and more countries are arming themselves with drones and increasing the production and purchase of this type of weapons.
Germany is particularly active in this direction, planning to purchase drones from Helsing and Stark for 536 million euros, both of which have been tested in Ukraine.
The organizers of the event emphasize that only European Union member states will have access to the event. It is currently unknown whether Ukraine will be exempted from this issue, and it is also unknown whether Ukrainian companies have a desire to participate in such an event, especially given that more and more Ukrainian companies are creating joint ventures in European countries – for example, the Ukrspetssystems company recently began assembling its UAVs in the UK.

At the same time, it is worth noting that with the development of the drone industry abroad, more and more new own developments will appear there. Therefore, it is now important to intensify work on promoting Ukrainian weapons and technologies on the international market, as with each passing month, more and more countries are taking Ukrainian solutions and experience into account and creating their own developments.
