Ukrainian drone pilots pursued, disabled, and ultimately destroyed russian self-propelled gun, exploiting an open hatch to deliver the final blow

On the Lyman axis, Ukrainian drone operators from the Signum Battalion of the 53rd Brigade have destroyed russian self-propelled artillery system in a precise three-strike operation. Footage of the engagement was released on the battalion's official channel, documenting what the operators described as a staged "duel of drone versus steel".

According to the brigade, the encounter began as a pursuit. The russian self-propelled gun attempted to withdraw after being detected, while an accompanying anti-drone operator reportedly tried to intercept the incoming UAV. However, the first drone struck its target despite these countermeasures, demonstrating both accurate piloting and the limited effectiveness of improvised anti-drone defenses in dynamic battlefield conditions.

The second phase followed quickly. Damaged but still mobile, the artillery system began emitting smoke and attempted to reposition further away from the strike zone. Ukrainian operators launched another sortie, delivering a second hit that further disabled the platform and left it effectively trapped.

During the third flight, the operator identified a critical vulnerability: an open hatch on the self-propelled gun. Exploiting the opportunity, the drone maneuvered directly into the exposed compartment. The resulting explosion triggered detonation inside the vehicle, leading to its complete destruction.

Tactically, the engagement highlights the evolving role of first-person view and strike drones in counter-artillery warfare. Instead of relying solely on traditional artillery duels, Ukrainian units increasingly deploy loitering and attack drones to hunt high-value assets such as self-propelled guns, which are essential to russian fire support operations.

As Defense Express previously reported, units of the Lasar's Group from Ukraine's National Guard have destroyed russian BM-27 Uragan multiple launch rocket system on the Zaporizhzhia axis. The operation eliminated a key enemy asset that had been actively firing on the city of Zaporizhzhia and its civilian infrastructure.
