The German military intends to purchase hundreds of Skyranger anti-aircraft systems, with a budget of €6-8 billion

As part of a large-scale weapons procurement program for the army, the German Defense Ministry plans to purchase hundreds of Skyranger air defense systems. As Armin Papperger, Rheinmetall's CEO, recently announced, the Bundeswehr may sign a deal to purchase Skyranger systems valued between €6 billion and €8 billion by the end of this year.

According to Hartpunkt, the contract appears to be divided into two parts. The first part is to be implemented by 2029, and the second part between 2029 and 2035.

Papperger refused to disclose data on the number of systems, although this is not really a big secret. It is known that Germany has calculated the number of air defense systems needed for comprehensive air coverage, with Skynex estimating the requirement at 500–600 systems.

Ultimately, it was revealed that the Bundeswehr plans to purchase up to 5,000 Boxer armored vehicles, with 600 configured to carry the Skyranger 30 air defense system.

Taking into account this quantity and the announced budget of €6-8 billion, the estimated price per Skyranger 30 is projected to range from €10 million to over €13 million.

For comparison, in early 2024, it was reported that Germany plans to purchase up to 49 units of Skyranger 30 for up to €600 million, which amounts to slightly over €12 million per unit.
