Estonia has secured an early delivery of additional M142 HIMARS systems capable of firing ATACMS missiles with a range of up to 300 km

Estonia is ordering three more M142 HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems from the United States for its military. The delivery timeline is described as optimistic. Deliveries are scheduled for 2027.

In addition to the rocket artillery systems, the agreement signed between U.S. company Lockheed Martin and the Estonian Center for Defence Investment (ECDI/RKIK) aims to strengthen the local defense industry. The investment is expected to amount to $11 million.

A local HIMARS service center is expected to open, with services provided by Estonian companies. The purchase adds to the six launchers delivered in spring 2025.

Estonia appears to have reduced its new order for M142 systems to three launchers, compared with a previously reported minimum of six. Meanwhile, the start of deliveries has been moved up to 2027 from 2028–2029, a year or two earlier than previously planned.

The country had previously purchased six K239 Chunmoo systems from South Korea. The decision was prompted by previously reported long HIMARS delivery times from the United States, which raised doubts about future procurements. However, both systems were selected.

In other words, Estonia will have three fewer U.S. MLRS systems than previously expected. At the same time, together with South Korean systems, this would still represent a significant capability, including the potential to target naval assets near St. Petersburg using ATACMS and similar missiles.

Reducing the order volume may be one way to speed up the delivery of new launchers by a year or two. Additionally, Lockheed Martin was persuaded to involve Estonian industry in order to secure the deal.

Budget constraints may also have played a role. For instance, due to these constraints, the country suspended its program to purchase new infantry fighting vehicles and redirected €500 million to other priorities, particularly strengthening its air defense capabilities.
