The Armed Forces of Ukraine have in service Spanish VAMTAC ST5 armored vehicles, so the new version of VAMTAC-AX4 could have been created taking into account the experience of combat operation of these vehicles

The Spanish defense company UROVESA (URO Vehículos Especiales S.A.) will first demonstrate to the public its new VAMTAC-AX4 armored vehicle at the Eurosatory 2026 exhibition, which will last from June 15 to 19 in Paris. VAMTAC-AX4, compared to the previous version, VAMTAC ST5 armored vehicle, which is also in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, will receive a number of improvements.

In particular, the latest version of the VAMTAC-AX4 by UROVESA, as Infodefensa reported, is capable of transporting up to 11 people including the driver, has a carrying capacity of 4 tons as well as will be distinguished by a high level of armor protection. For comparison, the VAMTAC ST5 in the "station wagon" version has a carrying capacity of 2700 kg and can transport up to seven people.

From the side of Defense Express, we note that here we can actually say that the Spaniards have modernized their VAMTAC following the example of the Ukrainian Novator-2 armored vehicle, which was created as a result of the operation of the previous version of the Novator armored vehicle on the battlefields of russia-Ukraine war.

Then the Ukrainian modernized armored vehicle received the ability to transport up to 10 servicemen against 5 in the previous version (it was the military who requested a more spacious vehicle), enhanced mine protection, increased payload almost twice (3340 kg in the Novator-2 against 1845 kg in the Novator armored vehicle).

Given that the Spanish VAMTAC ST5 armored vehicles are operated by the Ukrainian Defense Forces, it is possible that the new version - VAMTAC-AX4 - was also created taking into account the experience of operating the VAMTAC ST5 on the battlefield.

Last year, UROVESA announced plans to double the production of these armored vehicles to 5,000 units per year, but this is a rather long-term project with a "deadline" of 2029.

Recall that VAMTAC is a multi-purpose platform that can be adapted to perform various tasks and is used around the world in about 60 modifications. For example, in Ukraine, these vehicles are used, in particular, as part of the RapidRanger surface-to-air missile system.

The latest VAMTAC-AX4 armored vehicle will also have different configurations – from a basic armored personnel carrier to a command post, air defense vehicle, medical evacuation vehicle, etc.

Defense Express reported earlier, Ukraine and Spain Agreed on Patriot Air Defense, Artillery, VAMTAC Vehicles, and Drone Cooperation with €1B Aid Package.
