Boxer vehicles with RCT30 turret alongside RCH 155 howitzers, they differ from similar Qatar "drone killers"

The first German wheeled IFVs based on Boxer with RCT30 turret and anti-drone air defense function have arrived in Qatar. And they precede the promised RCH 155s, which were ordered in exchange for transferring PzH 2000 howitzers to Ukraine.

KNDS Germany announced the start of deliveries but did not specify the quantity in the first batch. The photo shows at least three units, while information available on the internet suggests there are as many as six, with another four to arrive in the coming months.

In total, Qatar placed an order for 10 Boxers with RCT30 turret in 2023. The latter is also installed on the AiTO30 promised to Ukraine, as well as Schakal IFVs purchased by Germany and the Netherlands.

However, Qatar's vehicles differ in their anti-drone purpose, for which they were equipped with additional passive electronic reconnaissance equipment. Meanwhile, the fire capabilities include the standard RCT30 function of firing ammunition with proximity fusing.

At the same time, achieving the same effectiveness as Skynex or Skyranger "drone killers" being supplied to Ukraine won't be possible due to the absence of its own radar. So they'll have to rely on visual detection and electronic reconnaissance.

Recall that in 2024, Qatar agreed to Germanys circular exchange proposal whereby it transfers 155mm tracked PzH 2000 howitzers to Ukrainian military. In return, RCH 155 wheeled howitzers were ordered for it.

Thus, this country will be an operator of two vehicles at once based on heavy Boxer 8x8 armored vehicles. Such a choice may suit desert landscape with available road network quite well. The success of design solutions is confirmed by the fact that they were even copied in China.

As already mentioned, Ukraine is also waiting for 9 Boxers with RCT30 turret, but they will supposedly be in a special command post variant for controlling RCH 155. Actually, the integration of this equipment into Ukraine’s Kropyva system apparently contributed to delivery delays.
