Donald Trump's policy of rapidly easing relations between the U.S. and russia has reached a new milestone: the resumption of dialogue between the two countries' Defense Ministries. The U.S. European Command (EUCOM) reported on this "progress" in relations with the aggressor country, which aims to destroy Ukraine and its people.
"Following the productive and constructive progress towards President Trump's goal of peace in Ukraine made by Jared Kushner and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff over the past week, the U.S. and russian federation agreed today [January 5, 2026] in Abu Dhabi to reestablish high level military-to-military dialogue," the EUCOM statement reads.

It is noted that this channel will ensure constant contact "as the parties continue to work towards achieving a lasting peace." The dialogue, which is to be conducted between EUCOM commander Alexus Grynkewich and war criminal, Chief of the General Staff of the russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov should make it possible to "avoid miscalculation and to provide a means for avoiding unintended escalation by either side." At the same time, it is emphasized that Grynkevich "looks forward to initiating this high-level dialogue."
It is important to add that relations between the U.S. and russian Defense Ministries were suspended back in the fall of 2021, even before the start of russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine. They have remained frozen ever since.
This position is fully consistent with the updated U.S. National Security Strategy, which views russia as a stable partner. At the same time, this statement contains two aspects that are worth paying attention to, as they may be significant nuances.
First, the following statement: "Maintaining dialogue between militaries is an important factor in global stability and peace, which can only be achieved through strength, and provides a means for increased transparency and de-escalation."
The second is the proposed level of relations. Until 2021, direct dialogue took place on an equal footing between the chiefs of the general staff. At the same time, the EUCOM commander holds a rank equivalent to that of a russian military district commander.
It is also worth considering that, at the time of publication, the russian Ministry of Defense had not publicly announced its position on this issue.
