On New Year’s Eve 2024, russian forces launched a coordinated drone attack against Ukraine, utilizing a record number of Shahed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The attack originated from four launch points: Cape Chauda and Balaklava in Crimea, Kursk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in russia.
A total of 90 Shahed-136/131 drones were deployed, targeting various regions across Ukraine. The attack coincided with airstrikes launched from temporarily occupied territories in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, employing four S-300 surface-to-air missiles, three Kh-31P anti-radar missiles and one Kh-59 missile.

Ukrainian Air Defence Forces, mobile fire groups, fighter jets and Air Force missile units, swiftly mobilized to counter the attack.
In a testament to their effectiveness, Ukrainian air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed 87 of the 90 incoming Shahed drones, marking a remarkable success in thwarting a major aerial assault.
