russian Buk-M1, Buk-M2 and Tor-M2 systems were damaged in a precision drone operation carried out by Ukraine's Nemesis Regiment and special operations units

Ukrainian drone operators have dealt a major blow to russia's layered air defense system, damaging three high-value surface-to-air missile systems worth an estimated $60 million, according to a statement by Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces on November 28. The strike targeted russian Buk-M1, Buk-M2, and Tor-M2, all core elements of russia's medium- and short-range air defense architecture.

The operation was carried out by the Asgard Battalion of the Nemesis 412th Regiment of the Unmanned Systems Forces, working jointly with the 12th Separate Special Purpose Center and the Kabul 9 special unit of Ukraine's Defense Intelligence. This coordinated strike underscores the increasingly integrated nature of Ukraine's drone warfare, where reconnaissance, strike platforms and special operations units operate as a unified system.

The Buk-M1 and Buk-M2 systems play a key role in defending russian forces and critical infrastructure at the operational-tactical level, providing medium-range coverage against aircraft, cruise missiles and drones.

The Tor-M2, meanwhile, is designed for close-range, high-speed intercepts, making it one of russia's primary defenses against low-flying munitions, particularly the types of drones Ukraine now uses extensively. Damage to all three severely reduces the layered protection russia relies on to shield its rear areas.

Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces emphasised that these destroyed and damaged systems represent not only financial losses but a strategic degradation of russia's air defense posture. With fewer medium- and short-range interceptors available, russian logistics hubs, command posts, and ammunition depots in the operational rear become significantly more exposed to future precision strikes.

As Defense Express previously reported, Ukrainian drone operators from the Achilles 429th Regiment have destroyed russian BTR-82A armored personnel carrier during ongoing heavy fighting on the Pokrovsk front. According to the unit, the russian vehicle attempted to advance under the cover of dense fog, hoping to exploit reduced visibility to infiltrate Ukrainian positions.
