In March 2023, Slovakia agreed to supply Ukraine with MiG-29 fighter jets and Kub anti-aircraft missile systems, with promises of substantial benefits in return. These included a discounted offer on 12 AH-1Z Vipers, with priority delivery to Bratislava. By July 2023, the U.S. State Department approved the sale.
Despite these arrangements, Slovakia’s Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák announced in July that the government was reconsidering its options. He suggested acquiring additional F-16 fighter jets instead of the AH-1Z helicopters, a decision supported by the new government in place.

In September 2023, reports emerged that Ukraine had expressed interest in the AH-1Z Vipers if Slovakia chose to forgo the deal. These helicopters, already allocated in the production queue, became an attractive option for Kyiv.
As reported by Defense News, Slovakia ultimately decided to decline the AH-1Z Vipers, as confirmed by Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák. Instead, the country opted to procure 12 UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters for its military.
This move offers a more cost-effective solution, as the Black Hawks are priced at approximately €158 million, compared to the $600 million approved for the AH-1Z Vipers. The latter figure includes weapons, spare parts, and related services.

According to industry sources, Ukraine had submitted a request for Viper helicopters nearly 20 months ago. With these aircraft now available, Kyiv’s interest has grown. However, the significant cost of the Vipers raises questions about how Ukraine would fund the acquisition—whether through defense aid or its own resources.
