Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Artan special unit is playing a central role in ongoing operations near Stepnohirsk on the Zaporizhzhia axis, where Ukrainian forces are conducting a coordinated effort to de-occupy and clear the settlement. The operation is being carried out in close cooperation with other elements of the Active Operations Department and the broader Armed Forces of Ukraine.

According to the report, the fighting has resulted in significant russian losses, with several hundred personnel eliminated, more than 20 armored vehicles destroyed or damaged, including tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, and multiple prisoners captured directly within urban areas. The scale of the engagement suggests a sustained and high-intensity battle rather than a limited raid.

Commanders emphasize that the mission represents an atypical deployment for special operations forces. As noted by unit commander Viktor Torkotiuk, operators have been required to hold forward positions for extended periods, in some cases spending months on the front line. This endurance has been translated into offensive effectiveness, enabling the unit to operate beyond its traditional role.

On the russian side, forces are relying on small assault groups, typically numbering between one and ten personnel, advancing under the cover of fog. This approach reflects a broader tactic often described as "meat infiltration", where dispersed infantry attempts to penetrate Ukrainian lines through persistence rather than maneuver. Ukrainian reconnaissance elements reportedly neutralize most of these groups in the grey zone before they reach defensive positions.

In addition to ground assaults, russian forces have concentrated elite FPV drone teams in the area in an attempt to gain aerial superiority at the tactical level.

However, Ukrainian forces have countered this threat through an integrated short-range air defense network combined with experienced drone operators. As a result, control of the low-altitude airspace remains contested but largely favorable to Ukrainian units, limiting the effectiveness of russian drone operations.

The broader operational significance of the fighting lies in the potential recapture of Stepnohirsk. Regaining control of the settlement would help straighten the front line, eliminate a potential staging ground for russian advances toward Zaporizhzhia, and expand Ukraine's fire control over key enemy logistics routes in the area.
