Strategic Blindness: the Effect of Ukraine’s Attack on the Voronezh-M Over-the-Horizon Radar in Orsk Explained

On the night of May 27, another over-the-horizon radar from the Voronezh family was attacked by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles. Initially, local media reported the incident, and now the Ukrainian branch of RFE/RL has confirmed it, citing sources in the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, who claimed responsibility for the strike. This time, the Voronezh-M radar system, located about 1,500 km from the Ukrainian border, was hit. However, according to Ukrainian military official Serhiy Bratchuk, the sources noted that the drone had to travel over 1,800 km to reach the radar, setting a new record for a long-range UAV strike.

The GLSDB is Affected by EW But the Air-Launched SDB is Not, Even Though it’s the Same GBU-39

There are problems with the combat use of the Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) in Ukraine, the U.S. Department of Defense admitted during a military forum in late April. Precisely, the weapon turned out vulnerable to suppression by electronic warfare systems.

But it seems there’s no such issue with the air-launched sister of this bomb, the SDB, as evidenced by many photos online showing the MiG-29 fighters of the Ukrainian Air Force regularly using them for precision strikes on russian positions.
