Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the F-16, has been awarded a $26 million contract under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program to support Ukraine's fighter jets. This step is crucial as it includes the creation of country-specific operational and maintenance documentation tailored to Ukraine's needs.
According to the Pentagon, the contract is scheduled to be completed by May 30, 2029. This means the U.S. will continue assisting the Ukrainian Air Force in integrating and mastering the F-16 for at least the next four years.

An interesting aspect is the funding source, which appears to come from FMS funds allocated under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative for building partner capacity. The contracting authority is the F-16 FMS Life Cycle Management Office of the U.S. Air Force at Hill Air Force Base.
Since every operator of the F-16 has its own specific requirements, each country receives a customized technical documentation package. For Ukraine, this will simplify operation and maintenance, help accelerate the transition from Soviet aircraft to Western platforms, and ensure smoother adaptation to NATO standards.

Ukraine is expected to receive dozens of F-16s, which, once fully delivered, will become the backbone of its Air Force fleet. Organizing their proper use and infrastructure is therefore critical to keeping the fleet operational.
Thus, obtaining specialized documentation improves not only today's operational efficiency but also lays the groundwork for the future development of Ukraine's air fleet. U.S. support through this contract is guaranteed at least until 2029.

Its worth recalling that at the MSPO 2025 defense exhibition in Poland, Ukrainian Defense Industry JSC held talks with Lockheed Martin and even signed an agreement to expand the capabilities of one of its facilities. This strongly hints at the possibility of deeper localization of F-16 maintenance, which would significantly reduce repair times.
All in all, the adaptation of Western fighter jets by the Ukrainian Air Force is moving forward at full speed, with active support from partner nations. Looking ahead, Ukraine may even be able to establish its own pilot training center.
