On the evening of August 31, 2024, russian forces launched a missile attack on the city of Kharkiv, marking the first use of the Grom-E1 hybrid missile against the city. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed the unprecedented deployment of this weapon.
The Grom-E1 missile is a hybrid weapon based on Soviet Kh-38 missile, known for its advanced capabilities. With a maximum range of up to 120 kilometers, it represents a significant escalation in the type of munitions being used in the ongoing war.

The maximum range of 120 kilometers can only be achieved if the missile is launched from an altitude of 12 kilometers at a speed of 1,600 kilometers per hour, as stated by russian developer, Tactical Missile Armament Corporation. Under less optimal conditions, the range can be significantly reduced. For example, when launched from an altitude of 5 kilometers, the missile’s range drops to approximately 35 kilometers.
