In the past, iran used to attack a U.S. military base: the success of the 2020 ballistic strike was highly controversial, but this time Tehran threatens a much more powerful response to any attacks on its nuclear facilities

Tensions between the US and iran are rapidly reaching their peak. Tehran has refused to hold direct talks with Washington regarding its nuclear program and, seeing the American armed forces gather one-third of its B-2 bomber fleet on a tiny island in the Indian Ocean, responded by demonstrating piles of missiles stored at its underground facilities.

Moreover, Tehran-backed media outlets warned that these missiles were put on high alert and aimed at "positions associated with the U.S." According to the message, "opening Pandora's box will come at a heavy cost for the U.S. government and its allies."

Defense Express reminds that iran had actually attempted attacks on U.S. property at least once, as a reaction to the elimination of the al-Quds special forces commander General Qasem Soleimani, in Baghdad. It was in January 2020 when iran launched 15 ballistic missiles at the American Ain al-Assad base in Iraq.

The results of this attack were controversial, with only 5 craters recorded on the territory of an air base with no missile defenses whatsoever. One aircraft was lost, there were no casualties among the personnel, although a few sustained minor concussion.

However, just a few years later, Tehran proved that it can launch a very powerful missile salvo. On October 1, 2024, as many as 181 ballistic missiles were launched at Israel in a single strike at a range of over 1,000 km. It was still unsuccessful, though, because of effective countermeasures.

Technically, iran can also attack much more distant targets, as it has an unknown number of Ghadr-1 ballistic missiles in its arsenal with an operational range of 2,000 km, as well as Soumar cruise missiles with an estimated maximum range between 2,000 and 3,000 km.

As for the potential targets of interest, there are quite a few American bases in the region at risk, including deployment sites in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and several other Persian Gulf countries, as well as in Turkiye.

But most of them don't hold any exceptional significance for the U.S. Armed Forces. The only exceptions are the Incirlik Air Base in Turkiye, where the USA keeps nuclear weapons, and the U.S. Navy bases in Bahrain and on Crete, Greece.
