Brazil plans to upgrade 52 of its Leopard 1A5 BR

Brazil plans to modernize the Leopard 1A5 BR tank fleet and is considering options that do not involve replacing the turret or gun, Infodefensa reports.

Thus, after conducting a number of studies related to the modernization project of Brazilian Leopard 1 tanks, the option to replace the turret of this tank or even the rifled 105-mm L7A3 gun with a new 120-mm one was totally ruled out. In addition, the Brazilians also refused to improve the armor of this tank. The reason for such a decision is simple: such modernization was recognized as too expensive.

So, Brazilians are currently considering two options for modernizing their Leopard tanks. The first involves the replacement or modernization of the fire control system, the integration of the basic command and control system (C2), the replacement of optical-electronic equipment and the air conditioning system.

The second option is everything that is in the first, but also the hydraulic mechanisms replacement in the turret, a laser threat detection system, an inertial navigation system, an automatic fire extinguishing system, etc. Probably, Brazilians will still choose the second option, since it is optimal according to the "price - opportunities" criterion.

It is currently clear that Brazil plans to upgrade 52 of the Leopard 1A5 BRs during 2024-2030. Tanks are expected to be in service at least another 15 years after modernization.

Previously, Defense Express told about how Brazil ordered, but wasn’t able to buy Centauro II wheeled tanks.
