russia continues to use its Grom-E1 missile-bomb hybrid in terrorist attacks against Ukraine

On the afternoon of Saturday, June 28, reports surfaced online that russia had attacked Dnipro using a KAB-type guided bomb. The Ukrainian Air Force later clarified that around midday, a tactical aircraft had launched an aerial munition that flew more than 100 kilometers before being shot down by air defense forces outside the city.

Dnipropetrovsk region Governor Serhiy Lysak also commented on the explosion, confirming air defense activity and thanking Ukrainian air defense units for intercepting a modern Grom-E1 missile-bomb.

This is not the first time russia has employed its Grom-E1 hybrid munition against Ukraine. While confirmed uses remain rare, at least publicly, fragments of a Grom-E1 were first identified in March 2023. Additional uses were documented in 2024, targeting civilian sites in Myrnohrad, Kherson, and Kharkiv.

The Grom-E1 is part of a broader family of guided missile-bomb weapons known as Grom, which also includes the Grom-E2 glide bomb. The E2 variant lacks an engine and instead features an enlarged warhead. It is available in two configurations: one with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead and another with a thermobaric (fuel-air explosive) payload.

As for technical specifications, the Grom-E1 weighs 594 kg, with a 315 kg warhead. Its maximum stated range is 120 km, but only when released from an altitude of 12 km at a speed of 1,600 km/h. When dropped from a lower altitude, such as 5 km, the range decreases significantly to around 35 km. The Grom-E2 variant, lacking propulsion, has a reduced range of about 65 km.

The Grom family is produced by russia’s Tactical Missiles Corporation JSC (KTRV). The weapon was first unveiled in 2015, underwent state trials in 2018, and is now in serial production.
