The Geran-2 drone was destroyed before Ukrainian forces could determine whether it was conducting reconnaissance or preparing for an attack

Pilots of the Darknode Anti-Shahed Battalion, part of Ukraine's Nemesis 412th Unmanned Systems Brigade, have intercepted and destroyed a new type of russian aerial threat during a nighttime operation. The unit reported the engagement on March 10, highlighting an emerging modification of Shahed-type drone used by russian forces.

According to the battalion, the intercepted target was the Geran-2 drone, the russian designation for Iranian-designed Shahed-136 loitering munition. However, this particular drone appeared to carry an unusual payload: two FPV drones mounted onboard the Shahed platform, suggesting a possible new operational concept.

Operators from the Darknode Battalion detected the target and successfully neutralized it before it could carry out its mission. Ukrainian forces did not specify the exact interception method but confirmed that the drone was destroyed in Ukrainian airspace during the night.

The presence of FPV drones attached to the Shahed platform indicates a potential evolution in russian drone tactics. Traditionally used as a one-way attack drone, Shahed drone has increasingly been adapted for different roles, including reconnaissance and electronic warfare support. Integrating smaller FPV drones could expand its functions even further.

One possible scenario is that the drone could serve as a carrier platform, transporting FPV drones closer to the front line or deep into Ukrainian territory before releasing them to strike individual targets. Such an approach could complicate air defense by combining long-range strike capabilities with short-range precision attacks.

Another possibility is that the drone was performing a reconnaissance mission, using the FPV drones to conduct localized surveillance after reaching a designated area. However, Ukrainian operators were unable to determine its exact role, as the target was destroyed before further activity could be observed.

The battalion noted that the variety of the Shahed modifications encountered on the battlefield continues to demonstrate russia's efforts to adapt its drone arsenal. Each interception, however, reduces the immediate threat to Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.
