Thermal footage shows Ukrainian UAV approaching and striking russian TOS-1A system while it was engaged in firing operations

Ukraine's 33rd Brigade has released footage showing the destruction of russian TOS-1A Solntsepyok heavy flamethrower system by Ukrainian drone. The strike was carried out by operators of the Legion Battalion.

The footage appears to have been recorded using a thermal imaging camera, indicating that Ukrainian drone was operating at night. The video captures russian TOS-1A system while it was actively firing, shortly before Ukrainian UAV approached the combat vehicle.

The drone then flies directly toward the TOS-1A system and strikes the vehicle. The impact is followed by a powerful explosion, suggesting that the vehicle was hit while carrying its ammunition load. The timing of the strike is particularly notable because the system was engaged in combat when it was targeted.

The TOS-1A is a specialized heavy flamethrower system built on a tank chassis and designed to deliver concentrated strikes against battlefield positions. Unlike conventional multiple-launch rocket systems, it uses thermobaric ammunition, which makes it particularly dangerous against personnel in trenches, shelters and fortified positions.

The launcher carries 24 tubes for 220 mm rockets and can fire its full salvo within seconds. Thermobaric warheads create a high-temperature blast effect and pressure wave, making the system especially suited to attacking fortified or enclosed positions where conventional fragmentation effects may be less effective.

The system's capabilities are offset by an important operational limitation: its relatively short firing range forces it to operate considerably closer to the front line than many other rocket artillery systems. Standard ammunition is generally associated with a range of up to 6 km, while newer rounds can reportedly reach approximately 10 km.
