The Slovenian M-55S tanks have several distinctive features and have previously been observed in service with specific Ukrainian brigades

The press service of the 159th Separate Mechanized Brigade has released photos and videos showing training exercises involving crews operating these M-55S tanks. The footage indicates that the vehicles are equipped with Kontakt-1 explosive reactive armor on the sides, as well as improvised overhead protection structures designed to counter top-attack threats.

These tanks remain relatively uncommon in Ukrainian service. Slovenia delivered just 28 units, and prior to this, their last public appearance dates back to 2024.

At that time, maintenance of the M-55S was demonstrated by tank crews of the 5th Separate Tank Brigade, now redesignated as a heavy mechanized brigade. Earlier, in early 2023, the 47th Brigade Magura showcased training on these vehicles.

The M-55S is a deep modernization of the Soviet-era T-55. The original 100 mm D-10T2S gun was replaced with a 105 mm L7-type gun, similar to those used on Leopard 1 tanks. The turret is also fitted with a remotely operated weapon station armed with a DShK heavy machine gun, developed by the Israeli company Rafael.

In addition, the M-55S features a ballistic computer and LIRD-1A laser warning receivers that can trigger smoke grenade launchers. The modernization program was carried out by Slovenia in 1999 with the involvement of Elbit Systems.

Given these characteristics, the M-55S tanks currently in Ukrainian service are likely used for fire support missions, including indirect fire from covered positions.

Earlier, Defense Express reported on concerns regarding the survivability of Leopard 1 tanks equipped with the C3105 unmanned turret against drone threats. It also highlighted examples of captured T-62 tanks upgraded with Kontakt-1 armor and improvised overhead protection, which proved to be an effective enhancement for National Guard units.
