Germany has become one of Ukraine's most important military partners since the start of russia's full-scale invasion, supplying everything from armored vehicles to advanced air defense systems. According to Ukraine's Ministry of Defense, the total volume of German military assistance has already exceeded €28.6 billion, making Berlin one of Kyiv's leading security backers.
Among the most valuable German systems delivered to Ukraine is IRIS-T air defense system, which Ukrainian officials credit with achieving a high interception rate against russian aerial threats. The system has proven especially effective against cruise missiles and Shahed-type drones, becoming one of the cornerstones of Ukraine's layered air defense network.

Germany has also supplied Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, which were originally developed during the Cold War to counter low-flying aircraft. In Ukraine, however, Gepard system found a new role as an effective anti-drone weapon capable of engaging Shahed UAVs and cruise missiles flying at low altitude. Its twin 35 mm cannons and high rate of fire have made it one of the most respected short-range air defense systems in Ukrainian service.
On the ground, German-made Marder infantry fighting vehicles have become an important asset for Ukrainian mechanized brigades. Despite being based on a design from the 1970s, Marder 1A3 system continues to provide reliable fire support and protected transport for infantry units operating near the front line. Ukrainian forces also use the vehicle's 20 mm autocannon against lightly armored targets and low-flying drones.

Germany has additionally provided Leopard tanks, Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers, ammunition, engineering vehicles, radars, drones, and other military equipment. Over time, Berlin's assistance evolved from cautious support into one of Europe's largest and most comprehensive defense aid programs for Ukraine.
