Denmark, in its efforts to support Ukraine’s artillery, not only handed over its Caesar and M109 howitzers but also ordered additional French and Slovak systems, as well as Ukrainian Bohdana howitzers. However, it appears that Denmark also managed to find 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled howitzers somewhere

Denmark delivered to Ukraine not only all 19 of its Caesar howitzers and M109A3 howitzers, which had been restored from storage, but also Soviet-era 122-mm 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled howitzers. This transfer occurred without any official announcement.

Furthermore, this information only came to light because the Danish government quietly updated the list of weapons and military equipment supplied to Ukraine. While other governments announce additional aid, Denmark has not publicized this at all. Danish security analyst Hans Tino Hansen noticed the update to the list.

The list does not mention the number of howitzers or their origin. Their provenance is unlikely to be determined, as the 2S1 Gvozdika is operated by 20–30 countries worldwide, with another 10 being former operators.

Defense Express notes that even the exact moment these howitzers appeared on the list can only be determined through public records. For instance, the Wayback Machine indicates that the mention of the 2S1 Gvozdika first appeared on the Danish government’s list between November 28 and December 12, 2024.

Overall, Denmark, despite its limited capacity to bolster Ukraine with weapons, remains one of the largest donors of military aid to Ukraine. In terms of artillery alone, Denmark has not only handed over its existing systems but has also ordered additional Caesar howitzers for Ukraine. Moreover, in cooperation with Germany and Norway, Denmark secured 16 Slovak Zuzana-2 howitzers. When faced with production constraints in the EU, Denmark began ordering Ukrainian Bohdana howitzers, initiating the so-called Danish model.

Regarding other weapons and military equipment provided by Denmark to Ukraine, the list includes F-16 fighter jets, over 140 Leopard 1 tanks, and about 50 M113 armored personnel carriers. In total, Denmark has contributed 64.8 billion Danish kroner (€8.7 billion) to Ukraine’s military support fund.
