Uncertainty regarding U.S. Army armored brigade transfer to Europe within rotation reached end. As Polish Minister of National Defenc Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz officially reported, 5,000 additional American military personnel will nevertheless be deployed on Alliance eastern flank.
In his message he thanked Donald Trump for this decision and emphasized specifically Poland is exemplary and iron ally.

This is genuinely positive conclusion to story that throughout week became subject of wide discussion and fears that Washington moved to implementing plans for reducing its military numbers in Europe. Early May, White House threatened to withdraw 5,000 military from Germany, and May 13 information appeared that 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division (2nd ABCT, 1st Cavalry Division) transfer to Europe was suspended.
Uncertainty with this brigade's fate and deployment location coincided with Kremlin's very aggressive rhetoric intensification directed against Baltic countries, primarily Latvia, as well as mentions of territorial claims to Finland and Norway.
Against this background, European politicians' reaction to U.S. decision was quite nervous, with Warsaw urgently dispatching delegation with deputy defense ministers to Washington.
Also due to any additional information and official Pentagon explanations absence, assumption spread that decision was essentially made to effectively withdraw troops from Poland. U.S. Vice President JD Vance had to refute this.
Currently, at minimum based on official positions, Poland will nevertheless have two brigades deployed immediately. This is very important signal for Kremlin and NATO eastern flank European countries. At the same time directly during nuclear exercises russia and Belarus are currently conducting, including practicing tactical nuclear weapons use.
Although not yet clearly confirmed whether March-announced rotation plan remains in force:
- 1st ABCT, 1st Armored Division replaces 1st ABCT, 1st Infantry Division
- 2nd ABCT, 1st Cavalry Division replaces 3rd ABCT, 1st Cavalry Division
- 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division replaces 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division
- 1st Infantry Division Headquarters replaces 3rd Infantry Division Headquarters
Specifically, Germany troop withdrawal threats have not disappeared anywhere, and specifically one brigade group numbering about 5,000 personnel Washington spoke about can precisely be transferred to Poland. One candidate is 2nd Cavalry Regiment, which despite name has typical Stryker Brigade Combat Team structure. It has permanent deployment point in Vilseck, Germany and is only infantry formation of U.S. Army in country.

However, main problem with American military deployment in Poland is their rotation. Brigade groups alternate on NATO eastern flank for nine months, requiring transporting significant portion of formation’s weapons and military equipment. This is also field deployment at training grounds with constant exercises in various European countries, creating additional burden and decreasing American military enthusiasm, for whom this is deployment with 9-month family separation.
At the same time, Poland is maximally interested in deploying American military on its territory permanently. Throughout NATO eastern flank there is confidence only American military physical presence can deter russia from attack.
