2024 contract frozen as El Dhafra airbase retains fighters on alert, while neighbor Algeria reportedly adds Su-35, Su-34 to Su-57E order

Morocco faced problem receiving 30 Mirage 2000-9 aircraft contracted in 2024 from United Arab Emirates amid U.S. war against iran.

Situation for Moroccans themselves is aggravated by neighboring Algeria's transition to new russian-made aircraft, specifically Su-57, Su-34 and Su-35. Infodefensa reports this referencing Intelligence Africa publication data.

It is noted Morocco and UAE supposedly agreed in 2025 on transferring 30 Mirage 2000-9 fighters through France mediation, which viewed this step as tactically important in cooperation with Emirates.

By February 2026, these aircraft delivery to Morocco had not occurred. In early February 2026, UAE military leadership decided they themselves need these 30 Mirage 2000-9 fighters more. These aircraft remain in heightened readiness state at Emirati El Dhafra airbase.

Additionally, United Arab Emirates had another motive to at minimum hold Mirage delivery for Moroccans. This involves disagreements between UAE and France regarding Rafale F5 work financing and possible delays in delivering contracted 80 Rafale F4 aircraft.

Whether Morocco in this case can count on receiving 30 Mirage 2000-9 aircraft at all, and if so when this will occur, remains currently unclear. Picture for Moroccans is also complicated by delay in delivering 25 new F-16 Block 70 fighters from U.S., contracted in 2024.

Defense Express recalls that in October 2025 data appeared that Algeria ordered from russia delivery of 12 Su-57E aircraft and 14 Su-34 aircraft. In March last year, delivery of at least one Su-35 to Algeria was recorded, but whether this story received development remains currently unknown.
