The purchase of the NASAMS air defense system will strengthen Ukraine's defense against russia’s air threats

This air defense system is capable of striking aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters and cruise missiles. The $182 million contract signed on August 26 provides for the supply of two NASAMS batteries to Ukraine, the Pentagon states, mil.in.ua reports.

The agreement also includes training and logistical support for the Ukrainian military and security forces.

"NASAMS are just the latest in the diverse set of air defense capabilities we are delivering to Ukraine," Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment William A. LaPlante said. "These are proven systems that will make a real difference in the battlefield," he added.

The purchase of two batteries of NASAMS air defense system is part of the third package of Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. It was announced on July 1, when $820 million was allocated for security assistance to Ukraine.

This military support package also included up to 150,000 artillery 155 mm rounds and four counter-battery radars.

The spokesman of the command of the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Yuriy Ignat, announced earlier that the air defense of Ukraine will receive two batteries of the NASAMS missile complex.

Air defense systems are included in a new $3 billion package of US military aid.
