Ukrainian special forces from the Shamanbat unit of the Defense Intelligence have captured four russian soldiers during a recent operation on the front lines. These captives will be added to Ukraine's prisoner exchange fund and are expected to be swapped for Ukrainian defenders held by russia.
The engagement involved a firefight between the special forces and russian assault group. Video footage shows dynamic small arms combat, followed by a systematic clearing of enemy positions. The footage appears to confirm close-quarters combat typical of forward-area operations. Three other russian soldiers who took part in the clash were killed.

Capturing prisoners alive in active combat zones is a rare but valuable outcome. These individuals can later be exchanged for Ukrainian soldiers, some of whom have spent months or years in russian captivity. Prisoner swaps remain one of the few functioning channels of humanitarian negotiation between the two countries.
This incident adds to a growing number of Ukrainian special operations focused not just on eliminating enemy personnel, but also on gathering intelligence and securing assets for exchange. Such actions are aligned with broader Ukrainian efforts to maintain morale and demonstrate operational flexibility.
While the Defense Intelligence did not specify the exact location of the engagement, it is consistent with previous raids conducted by Ukrainian units in contested frontline areas. These operations continue to target small russian units, supply points, and isolated positions to disrupt the adversary's tactical posture.
As Defense Express previously reported, russia is embarking on an unprecedented military expansion, aiming to spend nearly 1.1 trillion USD on rearmament by 2036, according to Kyrylo Budanov, the Chief of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine. He warns this initiative is not merely about new weapons, it's a strategic transformation of russia's political, economic, and societal framework in preparation for long-term confrontation with the West.
