Besides mass tank and armor purchases, Germany plans a major boost in military drones, aiming for over 8,000 by 2029

Germany plans to increase the number of drones in its armed forces from just over 600 today to more than 8,000 units by 2029.These ambitious plans align with previously announced directions for expanding the countrys army, which also include mass purchases of tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and other armored equipment.

This information comes from Loyal magazine, citing its own sources. At the same time, the Bundeswehr notes that the ministry needs flexible contracts and continuous procurement to quickly integrate the latest technological advances.

More specifically, the plans include purchasing 1,200 mini-drones for the immediate zone and 3,028 mini-UAVs for the close zone. Another 800 drones with relay capabilities will also be acquired.

Most likely, these will be entry-level capabilities, such as those provided by the Black Hornet or military equivalents of the DJI Mavic. This would integrate modern technology into units, though reconnaissance UAVslike the Vector might also be included.

In terms of strike capabilities, there are plans for the comprehensive delivery of 1,424 loitering munitions or equivalent short-range platforms. This could include both familiar FPV drones and slightly longer-range systems like the HX-2

from Helsing.

Importantly, in addition to the planned 8,000 drones, there will also be a reserve stock of between 20% and 40% of the regular quantity. This would ensure sustained operational support and availability.

It is clear that the Bundeswehr now has a defined strategy for integrating UAVs into its forces and is currently in talks with industry on its implementation. Most likely, this strategy will be officially presented by the end of the year, alongside other large-scale procurements revealed earlier.

While one might consider potential large contracts for the Ukrainian defense industry — which has experience with drones — the situation is not that straightforward. It is highly likely that Germany will want to involve primarily domestic manufacturers, or at least give them priority in implementation.
