The U.S. produces only 12 Dark Eagle hypersonic missiles a year, but that hasn't stopped calls to deploy them against Iran in the Middle East

The U.S. wants to deploy its latest Dark Eagle hypersonic missiles, which are still undergoing testing, in the Middle East. The goal is to target Iranian launch sites now beyond the range of PrSM ballistic missiles.

According to Bloomberg, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has submitted such a confidential request, but no decision has been made yet. If approved, this would mark the first time the U.S. has used this weapon in combat.

The article also notes that the deployment of hypersonic missiles will help catch up with Russia, which is using its Kinzhal and Zircon missiles in Ukraine, as well as with China, which already has similar weapons in its arsenal. However, there have been no official comments so far.

From Defense Express we would like to note that the Dark Eagle, or LRHW (Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon), currently exists in very limited numbers—possibly fewer than a dozen—as the project is still in the testing phase. Production is currently 12 units per year, with plans to increase it to 24.

It is unclear how long the supply will last, as PrSM stockpiles were quickly exhausted during the conflict with Iran. The 500 km-range ballistic missile is nearing mass production, with 400 units planned for 2026 and further expansion expected.

Deployment against Iran would effectively serve as a combat test of the new hypersonic missiles' effectiveness. In addition, it would provide a strong narrative in terms of strategic messaging and public relations. However, the practical benefits are highly questionable.

The Dark Eagle has a range of 3,700 km, while its warhead contains only 13.61 kg of explosives. At the same time, the project is significantly behind schedule, raising questions about the feasibility of its development.

In March 2026, reports indicated that the hypersonic weapons system was nearing deployment in the United States. It is possible that it will be sent to Iran as part of this process.
