On March 17, Ukrainian forces carried out a strike against a key facility of russia's military-industrial system in Novgorod region. The target was the 123rd Aircraft Repair Plant located in the city of Staraya Russa, a site involved in sustaining russia's military aviation capabilities.
The strike was part of a broader Ukrainian effort aimed at reducing the operational capacity of the russian defense industry. By targeting repair and maintenance infrastructure, Ukraine continues to focus not only on frontline assets but also on the systems that enable their long-term use and regeneration.

The 123rd Plant specializes in the full-cycle repair and modernization of military transport aircraft and their components. Such facilities play a critical role in maintaining fleet readiness, particularly for aircraft heavily used in logistics, troop transport, and supply missions across various theaters of operation.
One of the plant's key advantages is its on-site runway, which allows it to receive large aircraft directly for servicing. This capability makes it an important logistical hub, enabling faster turnaround times for damaged or worn aircraft without requiring additional transport to other facilities.
According to available information, the strike hit an aircraft maintenance hangar used for servicing Il-76 and L-410 aircraft. Il-76 aircraft, in particular, is a backbone of russia's military transport aviation, widely used for strategic airlift operations, while L-410 aircraft supports lighter transport and utility roles.
Damage to such maintenance infrastructure could have a cumulative effect on russia's ability to sustain high operational tempos. Even limited disruption in repair cycles can lead to reduced aircraft availability, especially under conditions of intensive use.
At this stage, the full extent of the damage remains unclear, and assessments are ongoing. However, the targeting of specialized aviation repair facilities indicates a continued Ukrainian emphasis on undermining critical nodes within russia's military support architecture.
