On March 28, 2024, troops belonging to Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, specifically the Special Operations Forces of the Defense Intelligence, codenamed Kabul 9, identified and targeted russian Buk surface-to-air missile system in Zaporizhzhia region. They engaged the system using artillery fire.
The Buk, created by the Soviet Union, is a family of self-propelled surface-to-air missile systems. It was specifically engineered to combat various threats like cruise missiles, smart bombs, fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles. The system utilizes 9M38 missiles equipped with a 70 kg high-explosive fragmentation warhead. Capable of engaging targets within a range of 40 km and at altitudes of up to 25 km.
