In the early hours of May 16, 2025, the Ukrainian Air Force lost contact with one of its F-16 fighter jets during an operation to repel an enemy airstrike. At approximately 03:30 local time the aircraft, actively engaged in intercepting hostile aerial targets, went silent.
Preliminary reports indicate that the pilot successfully destroyed three enemy aircraft and was engaging a fourth with the jet's cannon when an unexpected malfunction occurred on board. Demonstrating exceptional skill and presence of mind, the pilot diverted the stricken aircraft away from any populated area before ejecting.

A search-and-rescue team was dispatched immediately and, thanks to rapid coordination, located and evacuated the pilot within a short time. He is reported to be in good condition, safely out of harm's way, with no threats to his life or health.
An official commission has been convened by the Air Force to conduct an objective investigation into the circumstances that led to the in-flight emergency. Their findings will help ensure that any technical vulnerabilities are identified and addressed, maintaining the high operational standards of Ukraine's fighter fleet.
