The destruction of the Orion base weakens russia's ability to conduct long-endurance reconnaissance missions over the front lines

Ukrainian forces have struck a key russian facility used for storage and maintenance of the Orion combat-reconnaissance UAVs in the temporarily occupied settlement of Kirovske, Crimea. The operation, carried out overnight on November 13, targeted one of the most valuable elements of russia's drone infrastructure on the peninsula.

The Orion is a russian medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV capable of carrying air-to-ground munitions and precision-guided bombs. The drone can remain airborne for up to 24 hours at altitudes of up to 7,500 meters and features a wingspan of 16.3 meters. It is considered a rare and expensive asset in russia's arsenal, designed to perform both reconnaissance and strike missions.

The destroyed facility in Kirovske reportedly served as a storage and maintenance site for these drones, as well as a hub for their arming and operational preparation. The loss of such infrastructure could significantly affect russia's ability to conduct long-endurance aerial surveillance and precision strikes from Crimea.

Destroying the base where such drones were housed completes what Ukrainian operators describe as "the full circle", from intercepting individual aircraft to striking the infrastructure that enables their deployment. It also underlines how coordinated intelligence, including open-source and AI-assisted analysis, plays a growing role in Ukraine's precision operations.

As Defense Express previously reported, Ukrainian forces have carried out a coordinated strike targeting russian military-industrial infrastructure, hitting the Stavrolen petrochemical plant in Stavropol region and an ammunition depot in the temporarily occupied settlement of Novyi Svit, Donetsk region.

The operation, confirmed by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on November 12, aimed to reduce the enemy's capacity to produce materials essential for its war machine.
