Special Operations Forces of Ukraine successfully destroyed russian BUK-M1 surface-to-air missile system before it could strike

The information about the destruction of ussian BUK-M1 SAM system was published by the press service of Special Operations Forces of Ukraine on its Telegram channel. During reconnaissance in the disputed area, fighters of the 3rd Separate Special Forces Regiment discovered russian BUK-M1 system. The system was discovered just as it was preparing to launch missiles.

"Our operators promptly transmitted the coordinates of the enemy target to the missile artillery units of the Defense Forces. The BUK-M1 system was not able to launch a single missile - it was promptly eliminated," the Special Forces emphasized.

The Buk is a family of self-propelled, medium-range surface-to-air missile systems developed by the Soviet Union and later the Russian Federation, and designed to counter cruise missiles, smart bombs, fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The 9K37M1 Buk-M1 was adopted into service in 1983. The modernisation improved the performance of the system radars, its "probability of kill" and its resistance to electronic countermeasures. Additionally a non-cooperative threat classification system was installed, relying on analysis of returned radar signals to purportedly identify and clearly distinguish civilian aircraft from potential military targets in the absence of IFF.
