On Friday, September 29, the Swiss Federal Council approved a CHF 100 million package to demine civilian and agricultural areas in Ukraine and aid the country's recovery

The support program is designed for four years - from 2024 to 2027.

The government noted that that Ukraine is currently one of the most mined countries in the world.

"A third of its territory – a 174,000 km2 area larger than England, Wales, and Northern Ireland combined – is estimated to be contaminated by mines and other explosive ordnance. The situation is making it impossible for Ukraine – long known as the 'breadbasket of Europe' – to resume agricultural production," the Swiss government says.

The government underlined that Switzerland has advanced experience in mine countermeasures. The Geneva International Center for Humanitarian Demining is located in Geneva, which over the last decade has provided assistance to our country in the training of specialists, strategic support and technical advice.

Currently, a small number of demining organizations operate in Ukraine. Among them is the Swiss Fund for Demining (FSD), which operates in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The country also has a number of manufacturers of demining equipment.

Switzerland already participates in humanitarian demining activities in Ukraine. A total of 15.2 million Swiss francs has been allocated for 2022 and 2023.
