The company anticipates additional contracts for the TRML-4D radars, strengthening Ukraine's air defense detection network

German defense electronics company Hensoldt expects additional orders for its TRML-4D radars for Ukraine by the end of 2025, further strengthening the country's air defense capabilities. The announcement came during the company's financial presentation to investors and analysts, where representatives confirmed that deliveries are expected to begin next year.

According to Hensoldt, current contracts with Ukraine are worth around €500 million, with future agreements potentially adding tens to hundreds of millions of euros more. While details remain undisclosed, it is not yet clear whether the new systems will be supplied as part of the IRIS-T SLM surface-to-air missile systems or as standalone radar stations.

At present, Ukraine has received eight TRML-4D radars as part of eight IRIS-T SLM batteries funded by the German government. An additional 16 TRML-4D radars have been delivered separately to enhance detection networks across the country. These radars are critical components in Ukraine's layered air defense, which relies on early detection to counter missile and drone threats.

The TRML-4D is a high-performance, multi-mission radar capable of tracking up to 1,500 aerial targets at ranges of up to 250 kilometers. Its active electronically scanned array technology enables rapid target acquisition and classification, even against low-flying and small objects such as drones or cruise missiles. This versatility makes it a vital tool not only for the IRIS-T systems but also for supporting Soviet-era air defense networks that are losing effectiveness due to attrition and spare parts shortages.

In July 2025, Hensoldt also announced a €340 million contract that included Spexer 2000 Mk 3 radars, which are integrated into Rheinmetall's Skyranger anti-aircraft systems. Together, these systems represent a growing German contribution to Ukraine's defensive resilience against russian missile and drone attacks.

For Ukraine, the upcoming TRML-4D deliveries will further bolster its radar coverage, allowing more rapid coordination between detection and interception assets. As the country continues to face near-daily air raids, radar systems have become just as valuable as missile launchers themselves, forming the eyes of the air defense network.

Hensoldt, meanwhile, is scaling up its radar production significantly, aiming to manufacture up to 1,000 units annually by 2027. The company acknowledges that Ukrainian contracts play a key role in sustaining this expansion, underscoring the strategic importance of Ukraine as both a client and a real-world testing ground for advanced air defense technology.
