In a surprise diplomatic move, Argentina has agreed to transfer two Mi-17E transport helicopters to Ukraine, bolstering the war-torn nation’s aerial capabilities. This decision, reached during Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s recent visit to Buenos Aires, signifies a shift in Argentine foreign policy under its new leadership.
The Mi-17E helicopters, previously employed for logistical support in Antarctica, were acquired from russia but faced operational challenges due to sanctions-related difficulties acquiring spare parts. However, the United States facilitated the deal by offering Argentina a financial incentive: partially offsetting the cost of these helicopters against Argentina’s planned purchase of F-16 fighter jets from Denmark.

“Currently, negotiations are underway on the terms of compensation to the Argentine side for the transfer of helicopters to Ukraine,” Pucara Defensa reported.
This strategic maneuver not only benefits Ukraine with much-needed aerial assets capable of troop and supply transportation, but also strengthens Argentina’s military modernization efforts at a potentially reduced cost. Additionally, it sends a clear message of solidarity to the international community, demonstrating Argentina’s commitment to upholding international order and supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
