Ukrainian HIMARS launcher operated by Ukraine's 45th Brigade has struck russian Buk surface-to-air missile system, hitting two vehicles belonging to the air defense system. The brigade released footage showing the engagement and its aftermath.
The strike targeted the Buk launcher vehicle and transporter-loader vehicle. The latter was destroyed, while the self-propelled firing unit was damaged in the attack.

The strike also triggered the detonation of the ammunition carried by the system. The resulting explosion further increased the damage inflicted on russian air defense equipment and effectively removed at least one Buk combat element from operation.
The target was first detected by other Ukrainian units operating in the area. The 45th Brigade said that personnel from the Third Army Corps and the K-2 Brigade helped identify russian air defense assets before the HIMARS strike was conducted.
This cooperation illustrates the increasingly integrated nature of Ukrainian battlefield reconnaissance and fires. Drone units and other formations can locate and track russian equipment, while artillery units use the resulting targeting data to deliver a strike with precision-guided weapons.
Buk systems are designed to provide medium-range air defense and can be used to protect russian troops and important military assets from aircraft and other airborne threats. Their destruction therefore has value beyond the loss of individual vehicles, as it can create gaps in russia's layered air defense coverage.
The 45th Separate Artillery Brigade noted that this was already the second russian Buk system it had struck recently. Repeated attacks on such systems indicate that russian air defense assets remain a priority target for Ukrainian forces.
