A subsidiary of aviation giant Antonov will build a new hangar to service An-124 Ruslan aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport. This is a logical choice, since the airline's main operational base was established here after the start of the full-scale russian-Ukrainian war.
According to the airport's press service, Antonov Logistics Salis GmbH is currently preparing for construction. The new hangar is expected to cover an area of 24,000 square meters, with completion planned for 2027.

Antonov Airlines operates An-124 Ruslan heavy transport aircraft, frequently used for cargo deliveries worldwide. They are also often used to deliver military equipment.
Ukrainian giants are contracted by NATO for strategic air transport under the SALIS program. The latest agreement was signed in 2021 and will remain valid until 2026, when it is expected to be extended.

The An-124 holds a unique position in the global market, facing competition only from the American C-5 Galaxy, which is operated by the U.S. Air Force. This keeps it relevant and ensures a steady stream of orders.
Previously, Antonov Airlines used the airport in Hostomel, Kyiv region, as its main base. However, after the start of the full-scale russian invasion, operations were relocated to Leipzig/Halle Airport.

Given the current risks of sending aircraft to Ukraine for maintenance, establishing the necessary facilities at the company's other sites is a logical step. This likely explains the decision to build a new hangar in Leipzig.
Supporting Ruslan aircraft keeps the Ukrainian company in a unique niche and reinforces Ukraine's ties with NATO. More work in Ukraine is desired, but the war currently makes this impossible.
