Quantum Systems expands operations with new UAV facility in Ukraine

Quantum Systems, a German defense company, inaugurated a new production facility for unmanned aerial vehicles in Ukraine on April 18, with the attendance of the Minister for Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin and Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck.

This marks Quantum Systems’ second facility, expected to employ approximately 100 workers by year-end, with planned investments totaling up to six million euro over two years. The company views this as a vote of confidence in Ukraine and a commitment to long-term support for the country’s defense efforts.

While specific production rates at the Ukrainian plant are undisclosed, Quantum Systems anticipates boosting capacity to 1000 units annually. The company also plans to manufacture spare parts at this facility.

Quantum Systems mentions that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been using their reconnaissance drones, Vector, since May 2022, with 212 systems already supplied as part of German defense aid. They aim to deliver 500 more drones by year-end.

In spring 2023, a German UAV manufacturer established the Service, Support, Training, and Logistics Center (SSTLC) in Ukraine for the Vector drone operator training, repairs and spare parts procurement.

Last year, Quantum Systems announced plans for a dedicated research and development center focusing on software and hardware improvements for the Vector drones. This includes enhancing data transmission, incorporating artificial intelligence for navigation and target recognition and adapting functionalities based on operational needs.

The Vector drones faced challenges against enemy electronic warfare systems, prompting necessary improvements after initial successful deployment. With the new R&D center, Quantum Systems aims to address evolving battlefield requirements and ensure optimal drone performance in varying conditions.
