The start of the repair of Ukrainian tanks does not mean that the dispute between Poland and Germany is finally closed

Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said on Saturday, July 22, that the Bumar-Labedy plant (belongs to the Polish Armaments Group, PGZ S.A.) in the city of Gliwice got the first two Leopard 2A4 tanks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for repair work. The condition of these vehicles is not revealed. We can see only one tank on the photo that the head of the Polish Ministry of Defense accompanied his message.

Poland and Germany agreed on the possible repair of Leopard 2 tanks at the disposal of the Armed Forces at the facilities of the Polish defense enterprise back in April 2023, after another meeting in the Ramstein format. But handing over the first Ukrainian Leopard tanks for repair does not mean that this project has worked at full capacity.

The authors of the Defense24 portal remind that there are still disputes between Germany and Poland about where the Leopard 2A5 and Leopard 2A6 tanks, which were previously handed over to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, will actually be repaired.

As it could be seen, the German Ministry of Defense is currently not satisfied with the fact that representatives of the Polish defense concern PGZ are asking for an estimate for tank maintenance services that is inflated, according to the Germans. In particular, the media reported that the Poles wanted to receive about 100,000 euros just for the technical inspection of one car.

Information circulated in the Western press that Germany may withdraw altogether from a joint project with Poland to repair tanks for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. But at the moment, the German Ministry of Defense limited itself to this announcement on its Twitter profile: "repair of Leopard 2A5 and Leopard 2A6 tanks can begin as soon as the Armed Forces of Ukraine indicate such a need. At the moment, negotiations are still ongoing on how to repair Leopard 2A4 tanks."
