Short-range air defense system scores another hit, highlighting need for more advanced Ukrainian defenses

russian Su-25 ground attack aircraft was destroyed by a unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces using a short-range air defense system, according to Major Illia Yevlash, the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force Command.

“The aircraft was shot down by a unit of the Ground Forces. As you know, the Ground Forces also have air defense systems. In particular, we see excellent work from short and medium-range air defense systems, which can effectively deal with various types of airborne targets,” Illia Yevlash said.

At the same time, he emphasized the need for advanced systems for Ukrainian troops, especially MANPADS (man-portable air defense systems), which can combat both low-flying targets and drones.

“And more serious systems that can reach further. This is not just about Western weaponry but also our Buk systems, which can effectively counter russian helicopters and attack aircraft,” the spokesperson added.

He explained that the Su-25 is an attack aircraft that carries out missions on the front lines, firing at Ukrainian military positions with various types of rockets.

“Most likely, the pilot’s personal factor played a role. If he felt fearless and made several sorties without being hit, it doesn’t mean he won’t be hit tomorrow or the day after,” Illia Yevlash concluded.
