Under Putin’s regime, Victory Day became a focal point of Russia’s national identity and a symbolism-packed event, whose underlying messages of heroism and victimhood seemed to unite most Russians. However, Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine throws much of this into question.

For Ukraine, World War II was first and foremost a great tragedy. Therefore, the Russian carnival of pobedobesie (the Victory Cult) is alien and inappropriate for Ukrainians.

Modern Russia is destroying the international legal order that prevailed after World War II, behaving not as a guarantor of security in the UN, but imitating the Nazi ideology that destroyed the previous foundations of international relations.

As in World War II, there is now a struggle between democracy, the right to life and liberty, on the one hand, and the maniacal desire to dominate and destroy, on the other.

World War II was a war of annihilation, sparing the lives of neither civilians nor soldiers. This is the kind of war Russia is waging against Ukraine, committing horrific war crimes.

Russian propaganda is infinitely cynical in its lies, as was the Goebbels propaganda of the Nazis.

The history of World War II teaches that compromises with aggressive totalitarian regimes lead not to peace, but to even greater bloodshed. Putinism must be stopped and condemned, as it was done with Nazism.

Ukraine marks the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation to honour the memory of all the victims of World War II in 1939–1945 On May 8. Commemorating the end of World War II in Europe on May 8 (and not on May 9) is a European tradition, which Ukraine joined in 2015.
