In the summer of 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine thanks to precision and pragmatism in their planning, carried out an operation that forced russian garrison leave Zmiinyi (Snake) Island in the northwestern part of the Black Sea and regained control over it.

Afterwards, more notable details were revealed to the public. For example, that time when Ukrainian artillerymen turned French howitzers into a "floating battery" so they could reach the island and shell the russians on it.

Currently, the Ukrainian island is under supervision by the International Legion of the AFU. But a journalist from RFE/RL project "Donbas.Realities" Roman Pahulych managed to visit Zmiinyi. Thanks to his photo report, we can see what is left of russians who tried to hold their grip on this tiny but important piece of land.

Among the destroyed equipment, there are "Pantsir-S1" anti-aircraft artillery and missile systems, "Tor" SAM systems, fuel tanks and ammunition. The numbers and variety show that russians were serious in their efforts to turn this island into a stronghold, yet failed to do so.

Usually, there was only a small garrison of board guards stationed on the island. All the buildings are a few to live and work in, and several other facilities. None left unharmed after the fierce battles for the Zmiinyi / Photo credit: Donbas.Realities, RFE/RL
